You’re a human. You are perfectly designed to move, think, and connect. So why do we spend so much time and energy trying to Not do those things? And what is this retirement thing?
Movement is life. You are either growing or decaying (not growing). Sitting on your duff is contraindicated for humans. Study after study shows how bad sitting is for humans. Houses are meant to be lived in, cars are meant to be driven and you are meant to move. And by move, I mean to move with purpose and intent, not aimless wandering. Did you do something besides move from the bed to the car to the chair and back? Did you walk with purpose, run intentionally, row or bike? Get some sunshine and get moving!
Your ability to think independently and critically is crucial to your well-being. If you aren’t willing to learn and explore and take a look at every viewpoint you risk being led about by the nose. People aren’t meant to be sheep. Your brain needs stimulation from lots of sources…visual, auditory, sensual, and imaginative. Without that stimulation, your brain, like your muscles will wither and die.
We are tribal animals, designed to be in community. Too often, when people “retire” they stop all social activity. This is just when you need it the most. You no longer have the work connection and now you are sitting around yelling at the television and slowly, inexorably sliding into the rut that will become your grave.
Be the best human you can be…that means to move, laugh, connect, think, explore and enjoy a life of gratitude.
