Sunday Story…In My Room

Everything is perfect. It is all exactly as it should be in my room. My room is light and bright populated with friends and lovers. My room is a sunny happy room that serves me exactly what I need when I need it. Except when it is not. Then my room is a dark and ugly little place, full of shadows and nasty, naughty little creatures that bite and sting in ways and places hard to mention. Then my room is a scary room steaming and teeming with all sorts of interesting pitfalls and traps for the unsuspecting traveler.

I live in my room. Just as you live in your room. We don’t have any choice. The room we create is where we live. I live in my head. Absent any outside influences the thoughts in my head create my reality. What would happen to you if I put you n a room with no windows, no color, and no furniture. Just 4 blank walls, no noise, and no other input other than the noise you can create in your head. Would you go stark raving mad? What would your mind create? What kind of world would you be living in?

Guess what? All the distractions around you are just things designed to keep you from discovering the world you have created. If you were to live in the mythical room with no input you would create an entire landscape in your mind. A whole new world to entertain you. It might be a dream, or it might be a nightmare. Could be heaven, could be hell, could be a little bit of both. I don’t know what you will create. I know you will create something. Humans are designed to do this. We are designed to create. And the first thing we create is a reality from our thoughts.

So what kind of reality have you created so far? What kind of world are you making up? The landscape of your room is your doing, your conception of what reality should look like based on your experiences so far. This is why small children invent the most wonderful magical worlds---they have no perception that those things are not possible. As we grow up and grow older we start shutting out and down the possible outcomes we might be able to create. Why? Why would you limit the walls of your room? Don’t you want a wonderful magical room to live in?

Your world looks the way it looks because you created it to look like this. We all have this consensual reality we are living in. What about the parts of the world we have all agreed not to see? The parts of the world that are running under the surface just waiting for you to bring it forward. Can you see the energetic signature we all walk around with? You know the one…you have seen it, felt it…especially after a particularly angry or confrontational exchange. You walk in the room and you can cut the energy with a knife. This dimension is there waiting for you to see it and explore it. Space is not the final frontier. The final frontier is the dimensions here on this world we are ignoring.

So here I am living in my head. Creating a reality that exists for me. Great love affairs. Heart aches and heart breaks. All designed by me, for me, created for the one purpose of making my reality the one of my choosing. In the blink of an eye I can create everlasting happiness quickly followed by a drama of soap opera proportions. Like picking the petals from a daisy…she loves me, she loves me not, she loves… And each petal carries the complete story…a soaring tale of love and transcendent happiness or a story of crushing soul wrenching devastation. Either. Both. Your room. Your mind. Your reality.

Can you take control of this process? How are you going to force your thoughts down any particular rabbit hole? Practice. Focus. Where your attention goes, your world grows. Focus on pain and unhappiness, discord and disease and guess what your world will look like? Here in our culture we have “the war on Poverty, Cancer, Diabetes, etc, etc, etc”. Our attention is on the conflict, the battle, the winners and the losers. The creation of this tension guarantees the continued existence of these things. They won’t go away as long as we are concentrating on the battle. In Aikido the practitioner is considered undefeatable because if you attack him you are attacking the universe and you can never defeat the universe. I am the universe when I stand as one, completely at peace and in harmony with the energy that flows around us all. When I sow peace, love, happiness, and laughter I reap the fruits of those things.

As we grow up we start limiting our world. We make it smaller and smaller. When we are little we our world is huge. When we are big our world gets little. What if you consciously created a bigger and bigger world? One populated by as many different people and places as you could ever imagine. And some you can’t. And a place where you want to spend lots of time. A not scary place, a not dark ugly little room.

So…How ARE things in your room?

Sunday Story…Every time We Say Good Bye
I die just a little.

Our modern culture is littered with images like this…when the ONE walks into your world it is shattered and transmuted. And when the ONE walks out your world is shattered and transmuted. We see it in film…”Of all the gin joints in the world she had to walk into this one…” (Casa Blanca), song writers write about it…”Every time we say good bye…” (Cole Porter), and novelists and poets go on about it...That last great love that walks into your life and then walks outs, your heart in their hand. Shattered and transmuted your life is never the same.

This is happening to you all the time. Every person comes into your sphere for a reason. Some of them are there for the really big stuff…the lifetime stuff…some of them are there for a while…the cycle sort of thing…some of them are there for a particular purpose…the specific lesson you need to be shown…and still others are just tour guides pointing out directions, mileposts, or sights to be seen.

The trick is to recognize all these different people, and to recognize where they fit in the universe of your life. For those of you who have not met me I am here as a sign post, pointing out some things of interest, or those things you might have missed. Perhaps we will meet someday and then our connection will shift in some way. When we say Good-Bye there are very few repercussions.

There are some of you reading this who know me in some official or professional capacity, Martial Arts instructor, training partner, crazy guy with the garden, Rotarian, or some other label or pigeonhole you have placed me into. For you, I may be here to help guide you on to some lesson you are supposed to learn, provide some learning or teaching that has been previously unfulfilled. When that capacity has been fulfilled we will probably part ways, or I may drift back into the peripheral category of tour guide. When we say Good-Bye there will be at least a satisfaction of the lessons learned.

There are others of you who know me much more intimately…friends over years, lovers, former lovers, people we can say when this happened it was marked by the presence of this person…for you and I our lives have intersected and joined together and stayed together and drifted apart and may drift back together…we have learned lessons together, laughed, cried, shared triumphs, disappointments, and energy. We may or may not do so again but when we come together we re-meet with a familiarity that doesn’t exist except in this kind of relationship. There are many of you who have fueled the content of these stories…who have provided the lessons I have learned that I now share with the world. Thank You. Our Good Byes cut deeply into the fabric of life, leaving a hole to be patched and mended, never to be forgotten.

Then there are those of you who have been here forever and will continue to be here forever. Parents, children, siblings, all my relations, the mothers of my children, spouses, and the lifelong friends that have been here decade after decade creates a group that is just there. This is the group that stays through the lessons, providing some of them, interpreting other lessons, and sometimes just holding space for us to learn the lessons we need to learn. This is often the easiest group to identify, the easiest group to deal with. Our Good Byes in this group don’t exist until the lights are turned out.

When you meet someone, when you say hello, do you wonder where they fit into the lexicon of your life? When you look across the room at that particular person, the one that is lighting up your energetic lamps, do you wonder what it is that they are going to be bringing you? Or what you are supposed to bring them? Because it is not always what you think…often that little zing of attraction is the universe telling you to sit up and pay attention. This person is here for a reason, has walked into this particular gin joint for a particular purpose. Your job is to discover what that reason may be. And to be open to it changing as your knowledge grows.

When we say Good Bye to some people we are done and over with them, there wasn’t much to be it. With others that Good Bye is a see you later. Still others, a fare thee well on your journey, our meeting is over and finished, thank you. With some lesson learned and Good Bye. And with the soul group, Good Bye for the here and now, see you on the other side.

So whichever it may be…
Every time We Say Goodbye
I wonder why a little.

Sunday story…If I Stick a Pen in My Heart

And spill it over the page will it satisfy you?

What if I stick the pen in your heart? Will you bleed all over a page too?

You know that is what I am trying to do don’t you? I am trying to get you to wake up. I am trying to get you to sit up and take notice of what is going on around you. Is it working yet? Maybe more blood, more guts more self revealing truths will get you started looking into the dark abyss of your own soul…both light and dark. Because, even in the most well lit of places there is a shadow somewhere. You might not be able to see it right off, you might not be able to identify it immediately but it is there, as sure as I am sitting here, that shadow is there.

That is why I am driven to reveal and expose myself like some strange nocturnal creature. So what is it that I am trying to get you to get? Maybe it is all about me…some ego driven trip where I just must reveal and let the world see my nakedness? My stripped bare, shivering, shriveled up kernels of what passes for knowledge exposed to the light for everyone to mock and whisper about.

What I want you to get is the importance of this work. Even if you don’t do it. Even if you say it is too hard, and I really don’t have time, and I really, really can’t look at my shadow --- it is waaaay too scary, if you just say I get that this is important. I get that the evolution of my soul is important but…I can’t go there this go around, maybe next time.

So I am sitting down about to peel another layer of this onion of my soul. About to give you another glimpse inside this twisted convoluted dark hallway that is my journey toward something more, something new and transparent. Hoping you will join me in at least looking at your dark, damp, fetid, fecund places. Those places where you hid all your broken toys, all your shattered dreams, all your bad, nasty decisions. Here we go…

There are several different levels of awareness in the world today…1.completely oblivious ---unaware of anything except the little part of the world in which they reside; 2.aware of other people lives ---some space for self knowledge in this area, paying attention to the immediate people around them and their own effect on those people; 3.aware of my own patterns--- allows me to start looking inward at how and why I am doing the things I am doing; 4.aware of my responsibility for my own words, deeds and thoughts; 5.aware of my responsibility for everyone else’s life--- and by everyone I mean everyone across the 7 billion people on the planet; and finally complete compassion and empathy for all of those people along their paths…

Which section do you fall into? Be honest…brutally honest with yourself. Are you willing to accept radical responsibility for your life? Not just your average, run of the mill variety responsibility but Radical Responsibility. What does that mean, you might wonder? In the dictionary that I am using Radical Responsibility means that accept full and total responsibility for everything in my life, full acceptance of all the karma I have created in this lifetime and any others that I might come across. That means if I was abused, molested, attacked, born into a less than abundant life I am accepting that I created that reality. That’s right all of it...the good, the bad, and the ugly…And once you accept that responsibility it is a very short step to begin healing those broken bits of yourself.

If I am paying attention, how can I not see the same patterns coming up over and over again in my life.
And since I am not insane (OK I might be a little crazy but it is hardly noticeable, really) I would
like to get a different result from those situations. Some of you may remember the Bill Murray movie
”Groundhog Day” where he is doomed to repeat the same day over and over again until he gets it right.
Isn’t your life like that? Do you keep doing the same things over and over until you get it right?
The universe is trying to tell you something. Maybe you should shut up and listen.

Maybe you should start really looking at your life and see where you can make an honest appraisal of your situation…what to shift and bring into integrity. It will be uncomfortable, it might even hurt a little (or a lot) but the reward of being so Radically Responsible is enormous. It may be so big that your next step in this life becomes even more joyful, generous and abundant…wouldn’t that be a switch!

So go ahead stick something in your heart and let it bleed...just quit sitting there doing nothing!

Sunday Story…I shot a man in Reno

I killed a man in Reno, just to watch him die. I brought him there and killed him dead. I am that man. Killer and Killed.

I didn’t come to Nevada to die. Not on the face of it anyway. The lure of a quieter, less stressful lifestyle may have been the reason the man I killed came to Nevada but the real reason was I brought him here was to die. I was stuck in a rut of mediocrity and terminal normality that I was going to make into a grave in 30 or so years. At 33 years of age I was preparing to live a life of quiet desperation, dropping into a dissolute neighborhood populated by drunks, addicts, and broken spirits. Afraid to actually end my life I was choosing the coward’s route, letting a precious human existence slowly ooze down a drain in to a swampy mess marked by adultery, alcohol, cigarettes, and an absolute ache in my soul.

Nevada is a place of contradiction. Churches sidle next to casinos, you can drink 24 hours a day, yet family values are on the lips of every politician, prostitution is legal but only when hidden away like your cousin who goes in and out of prison like most of us go to Wal-mart. People come to Nevada to do the things they would be ashamed to do in their hometowns. What happens here stays here…but what about when you live here? What about when the land of contradiction and incongruity is your home. How do you understand the split and reconcile it?

Somewhere along the way I found a life. And began to dig a ramp out of the rut I had been buried in. I began to inspect my life and found it devoid of integrity and congruity. My actions were so far removed from my word that they were not even using the same alphabet. Slowly, since I can be a little dense, it dawned on me that I could keep on keeping on and I would keep on getting what I had been getting…no integrity, no congruity, no life. Or I could look at the alternative…one which might look like something approximating a life as opposed to a death. Something that would carry congruity between words and actions. A life that might have purpose and meaning. So…the journey began. And what a long strange trip it has been. First cleaning up and admitting what I had done and who I had been to please the people in my life. I had to own my bad behaviors and all the deeds that ranged from ugly to nasty and vicious. I had to strip myself naked and clothe myself in a shroud of confession and confusion. The corpse was living and breathing yet dying before my very ministrations.

I had to kill myself, kill the person I was, the person I had been to become the person I was meant to be. The man I killed was no man at all. He lied, cheated, and stole. He wore a mask of good humor and clothed himself in the finery of self righteousness and intelligence. The people who loved him did not know him. That man allowed them to see only the surface, the façade. And loved him they did. Until he stripped off the clothes, and like the emperor who wore no clothes paraded around in his nakedness for all to see. And in the self revealing people came to hate him for the lies he had told them. Hated myself knowing that I had engaged in a most willing and engaging deception. That I had purposefully mislaid their trust and waylaid their hearts. And I killed that man.

I killed that man in Reno. I killed him to watch him die. I needed him dead so I could bear the new man into the world. A new man living a life of purpose and meaning. The man I killed was a dead man walking. It may have taken a few years but a dead man nonetheless. That walking corpse walked a talk but was as dissonant and discordant as to be unhearable.

The man who took his place, the man who was reborn in his stead lives in the light of integrity. He lives in the doorway of purpose and creates a lasting legacy for the world to inspect, not a life that hides under the rocks of lies and deceit. Not a life full of posturing and posing created to impress and fool the watcher. This man leads a life authentically transparent, created to teach focus and inspire transformation.

So yes, I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. And just like I planned I came to Nevada to die. And started living….

Sunday Story…Signs

And the animals speak. The trees whisper. Rocks move. The wind portends.

The world I live in is an animate one. It is alive with messages and lessons to be learned. It’s actually the same world you are living in if you are paying attention. The attentive constituent notices that the sun is coming up a bit later now that just a few weeks ago. The early morning air carries the bite and promise of falling leaves and hibernation on its warm breath. The plants are still producing their bounty but the time is coming when they will die back. You know all of this. It is encoded inside of you.

These messages happen every year, throughout the year. The sky shifts, the planet re-align, winter comes and goes, the moon waxes and wanes. What about the messages that are directed at me personally? Because winter is coming whether I am here or not, whether I pay attention or not.

Centuries ago some creature crawled out of the primordial soup and began to breathe air and started this journey that has put me in this place here and now. The number of events and lives that have taken place to put you and I on the same page today is mind boggling, even if we took only the things in this lifetime since my birth and yours. Where we have lived, the education we received that allows us to read this. The people we had to connect with for you and I to get to know one another. How did all this happen? Accident? Pure coincidence? Providence? Why aren’t you doing something else right now? You could be doing 100 different things rather than reading this. I’m glad you are reading it but really there are a lot of choices out there.

I caused my birth.
I picked my parents.
I have created every situation, every person in my life.
Everything that has happened to me since before birth has been part of the plan I had to create situations and experiences that would lead me here, now. Situations and experiences that move my soul forward in some way, should I pay attention to those situations and experiences.

What? You thought it was some cosmic accident, a joke played out by some deity?
War isn’t funny. Starvation isn’t funny. Rape, dismemberment, and genocides are not funny, not even in the joke book of the gods.

But wait, if I caused my life to look this way…then that person caused their life to look the way it looks. They chose death, cancer, abuse? Yes on some level they did choose. Look folks, this isn’t choice like picking out flavors of ice cream…oooh, let me have some sexual abuse this time around, or wow that starvation thing looks mighty interesting, a big scoop of that should make my soul quiver with anticipation. I don’t think it works quite like that.

Your job, my job is to evolve. On some level I am going about my life choosing situations and experiences that present opportunities to evolve. Sometimes that evolution maybe the experience of extreme suffering. It may be the opportunity for forgiveness. It may be to experience the searing happiness of love and joy.

It is very easy to get wrapped up in this contortion of thoughts…especially because the dictionary of meaning is missing. For instance…if I knew that the person over there was going to murder 5 people tonight would I be justified in killing the murderer before he became a murderer? And what about the people who are to die? Maybe part of their evolution is to die tonight at the hands of that person’s pain and suffering. This gets really sticky. Maybe my evolution is to make this choice…to decide who is going to live or die. Maybe I am supposed to live with the consequences of my choice and that is the evolution I am supposed to move toward. Can I make the wrong choice? And what makes it the wrong one?

The wrong choice would be the one that fails to move my soul forward in some way. The wrong choice would have my march toward enlightenment stymied. The wrong choice would create turn in my path that has me detouring for some amount of time.

I have made wrong choices. Choices that left me up on the side rail of life. Choices that put me on the side waiting for a new way to find the track of life again. Too many people are waiting on the sidelines. They have taken themselves out of the game. Sitting on the bench in the game of life is poor planning boys and girls. I get that it is hard. It is hard to face your sh** and take responsibility for how it looks. It is hard to realize that the choices you have made in life brought you to this moment. 50 pounds overweight? Sick? Bad Relationship? No relationship? All you bunky. All you. Not me. You made choices to do what you did with whatever happened to you. Maybe you crawled inside a bottle, or found comfort in pharmaceuticals, or some other self medicating strategy that looked like it would ease the pain of facing the lessons Your life brought you. How’s that working for you today? The hurt is still back there. Still throbbing somewhere deep in the recesses of your soul. In that cavern you tried to seal up is the lesson your life want you to learn so you can move on to the next lesson and the next life.

Not working real well for me. Just in case you hadn’t noticed. I can bury things, I can try to ignore the lessons but they just keep on coming. I created this mess and now I better start learning some stuff. If I keep doing what I have always done I will keep getting what I have always gotten. So if you are tired of your life looking the way it looks you better start making some changes. Because you are the one creating it. Not me. I am too busy creating my life to want to create yours.

Let’s get off the pity train and get on the Soul train. The train our soul wants to be on, the trip we need to take to ensure that we can get some different lessons both this trip and the subsequent ones. You don’t have to look at it. Maybe next time your soul will choose the starvation diet or maybe the abuse route will get you to wake up and start evolving. I need to you to evolve. I need you to learn and grow. Because the world can’t change without you changing and growing. I am doing what I can. How about you?

Sunday Story... You Don't Have to Say You're Sorry

Sunday Story…You Don’t Have to Say You’re Sorry

Sorry may be the most over used and under meant word in today’s common usage. We drop “sorry” like we drop “how are you”. It really doesn’t mean anything to either party but some people think it makes it all better. Like a single word could erase the hurt of a bad name, a broken trust, or a physical wound.

Sorry can’t make it better. It might take a little of the sting off the hurt but it won’t heal the hurt; it won’t make the scars disappear. As we live longer the slings and arrows or life pierce us in so many places, leaving the lines and weariness of a life lived.

Sorry isn’t going to cut it. Take responsibility as we have discussed. Make it right if you can. But there are so many things you just can’t make right. You can’t go back and get a “do-over” to make your actions turn out differently. The actions you took, the words you spoke, even the thoughts you formulated happened. And those things have consequences. To other people. So what to do? How can you make a divorce right? How can you make walking away from one (or more) of your children right? Just say “Oops, Sorry?” I think not.

This is a real quandary for the radical responsibility proponent. Part of a real apology includes making things right if possible. But it is not always possible. You can do some penance and no, that doesn’t mean a few Hail Mary’s and some Our Fathers. I can work with children. I can learn what makes me tick in relationship so that I don’t create the same havoc and ruin I did the ruinous time before. This is the work of responsibility. Radical responsibility.

You see, I am responsible for everything in my life. I am responsible for every person who comes into my life. I call them into my life. They are carrying messages and learning to me. And I am calling them into my life constantly. The trick is to shut up and listen. The trick is to get the learning. Because it isn’t like when you were in school…read chapter 14 and answer the question at the end of the chapter! No, these lessons are much more subtle and many of them are not what they appear to be on the surface. Especially the early warnings…the ones that are obvious when we look back but not so clear at the moment of impact. Later when we don’t listen we will get hit over the head with the message….some years ago I was involved in an auto accident that was not my fault (yeah right), at least that was what the accident report said. That accident was a message that I forced upon myself to create a decision I was refusing to look at and make. This is the way it works folks. A subtle hint, maybe something a little more clear and then WHAM hit you upside the head with the message. Ignore that one at your peril.

So if I am responsible for everything in my life…how do I make right the errors and mistakes I have made in my life. And believe me when I say I have made some terrible mistakes that affected a number of people’s lives and shattered trusts and expectations. Many of these mistakes can’t be fixed. What do I do? How do I make it right? Because penance isn’t going to do it. I can’t reach inside someone else’s psyche and tweak it this way or that and make it right. So what is left?

What can be done? Again my life is about me. I can’t go back. I can go forward. I can make sure I never do the thing that was so wrong again. But in order to do that, I must achieve some self knowledge. How many people do we know who keep making the same mistake over and over and over again. It may be a little different, some subtle little nuances but the bottom line is that it is the same mistake. Bottom line…You Gotta Grow Up. You need to find some emotional maturity…as Daniel Goleman describes in his best selling Emotional Intelligence:

Being self-aware—knowing our emotions, recognizing a feeling as it happens;
Managing emotions—handling and managing our feelings appropriately;
Motivating ourselves—marshaling emotions to pay attention, delay gratification, and stifle impulsiveness;
Feeling empathy—understanding others and recognizing their emotions; and
Handling relationships—building and maintaining relationships.

If I grow up I will stop hurting you and others. If I grow up I will have a shot at some other life…a life that thrives in the adventure of life. And it is an adventure...an endeavor in which the outcome is uncertain, where great reward is possible but only at the cost of risk, hard work, and danger. I am going to thrive on this trip around. And that means growing up. Growing up is the only way for me to honor the hurt I have caused you. Growing up is the only way for me to make sure it doesn’t happen again. And making sure it doesn’t happen again is an integral part of the apology.

So I can’t say I’m sorry. I can apologize, I can take responsibility, I can do the things it will take to have whatever I did never happen again. And you don’t have to say you are sorry…show me by growing and becoming the person you were meant to be. Answer the questions…Who are you and What are you supposed to be doing here? Then go out and live it.

Sunday Story...Every Breath You Take

Sunday Story…Every Breath I take

Every breath I take has been taken before. Recycled thousands of times. Cleansed, made new, and recreated to give me life. Every breath you take has been taken before, by your ancestors. You are connected to every strand of life that has ever existed through the air you breathe. Your breath does not just give you life; it has been giving life for millennia.

STOP. Think about the breath you are taking right now, this very moment. Can you take it in so very deeply into your belly, allowing the life it brings to permeate your entire being? Or are you gulping at air, gasping like a fish out of water? Too many of us just gulp and gasp for air, trying so desperately to get the life it brings into our blood and bones, unable to truly accept the gift that breath brings. Imagine trying to breathe in a sauna…you can’t take a really big breath for the searing heat yet you desire and want the healing and life giving force that breath will give. This is how so many of us breath every day, sitting at our desks, walking from the car park, up top in our lungs breathing from our minds.

Your scarcity mentality starts here, in your breath. Afraid that you won’t get enough, that the air you are getting will be taken by another, you grasp, and grab, and gulp at it trying to possess that which is not possessable. You must release the breath after you take it…there is no choice in this matter, no other way for you to live. You must release the breath shortly after you receive it. The alternative is death. But you can grab and grasp and gulp if you wish….it is your choice (again).

OR you could draw your breath deeply, abundantly into your belly, accepting the gift it brings into your life and then releasing it with gratitude for the life you have just shared with your ancestors. Breathing consciously is where abundance begins. You have enough air if you will just let it in to strengthen and nourish you. There is plenty for me and you and the other billions of creatures in the world who need and enjoy the same air across the globe. When our breath starts in our bellies, deep in out center we connect with the earth, the sky and everything in between.

There are so many times in our lives when we ignore the abundant universe, too tied up in our own little drama to realize all the gifts and true treasures that lie before us. In many ways the whole world is like this…there is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone abundantly. Yet billions go hungry every day and thousands die of starvation daily. Too tied up in our own little fiefdoms and hoards we ignore the abundance around us and allow our fellow creatures to suffer the ignominy of too little food. We could say the same thing of water…plenty of it yet thousands sicken and die for lack of clean water every day. Where is the abundant consciousness in any of that?

I say that we (the We that is you and I, and him and her, and us and them) by breathing in scarcity foist scarcity into the universe when we breath out. Should we just learn to breathe deeply, consciously, deep into our bellies the abundance of air that is ours for the breathing, and then breath by breath the universe will become more abundant. The hold scarcity and fear has upon so many of our brothers and sisters will loosen and fall away. When I breathe consciously, deeply, abundantly, the entire world can breathe the same way. When each of us begins the world can release even more abundance. There is enough. There is more than enough. We can each have all that we need to feel abundant, whole and integrated both physical and spiritually in the world. Whatever your path is, where ever your path is taking you, bring some abundance along with you. Release your abundance into the world.

Start with every breath you take…
